“She never looked nice. She looked like art, and art wasn’t supposed to look nice; it was supposed to make you feel something”

She Never Looked Nice

March 16, 2015

2014 has been a creative and exciting time for my personal work. Throughout the year I captured the portraits of many visual artists within the local Gympie region in the quest to bring these portraits to an exhibition in 2015. The exhibition 'Ateliers' will showcase a diverse selection of Gympies finest visual artists at work in their studios.

In 2014 I also had the pleasure of photographing the captivating lead singer of local Gympie band, Tom Rooney from Red Beard. His energy lent itself to some truly amazing images. Red Beard will be touring in 2015, with gigs starting in Brisbane.

Another personal project which continues into 2015 is the 'LYME LIFE' project. This project will capture the struggles of Naomi Robinson, Chronic Lyme Disease sufferer.

“Charmaine Lyons constantly seeks to convey strong narrative and meaning through her photographic art practice. Portraying the life of this sitter, an evocative visual experience, Lyons compels the viewer to examine their own body and the affect any illness would have on them.

’Lyme Life’ explores and interrogates the trials and tribulations of a chronic Lyme disease sufferer, Naomi Robinson. Lyons’ portrait seeks to challenge the viewer with a no holds barred image of loneliness, isolation, inequality, fear, sensitivity and fatigue that this sufferer experiences every day.

Robinson is a creative, ambitious, fun-loving adventurous soul whose life has been put on hold due to this debilitating illness - a young life cruelly impacted by this silent destroyer.”

And as always I have my beautiful girls to step in front of the camera and in 2014 they adorned themselves in true Steampunk style and Day of the Dead attire to create some spectacular portraits. The girls are a huge support for my photographic journey and are always there to help and model when needed. I'm sure there will be many more sittings with them throughout 2015, so please stay tuned.
